The Matterhorn – mystical, majestic, the mountain of mountains. No one can escape its fascination. A cragged rock with magical light standing alone on the horizon. Just impossible to resist.
On 22 July 1871 the Englishwoman Lucy Walker had just become the first woman to climb the Matterhorn – wearing a long flannel skirt as was appropriate for a Victorian lady. Wearing a flannel skirt when climbing Matterhorn would scare off any alpinist today.
